What is a toxic load?
You may know that your body has its own detoxification system, and this works daily to remove toxins from your body. There are multiple body systems involved in this process, including the gut to break things down, the liver to cleanse, the kidneys and bowel to excrete. It is a finely tuned system that can take quite a heavy load until it becomes overworked! A bit like a car engine that works well when you are looking after it, but eventually it needs a service and help to get back to optimal function.
So lets understand some of the terms around Toxins.
Detoxication is the mechanism of preventing toxic substances from entering the body. Detoxification is the process of removing toxic chemicals from the body.
Toxicity refers to the degree to which a substance is poisonous. If it interferes with the body’s normal functioning, it’s a toxin.
Toxins can impact our health by:
- Interfering with enzymes
- Blocking how our cells communicate
- Increasing oxidation
- By mimicking hormones
- Blocking nutrient absorption
So, our detoxification system can become overworked and can then under function and this is when we need to consider your toxic load.
Where do we find these Toxins?
They are hidden all over the place, but you find them in:
- Food & Drink

If you would like to help yourself to reduce your toxic load, then start with a home detox. That is look at one room at a time and see where you can lower your toxic load. The kitchen is a good place to start. Look at what cleaning products you are using and whether they have any nasties in them. You can find the list of toxins here.
I have included a quick check list for you to consider the different products around your home. You will find it here.
If you are finding lots of chemicals in your products then don’t be alarmed, this is a good time to start to make some changes. Lowering the amount of toxins in your environment means your detoxification systems have less to process and this lowers your toxic load. You will find the toxin load questionnaire here
We cannot eliminate all toxins as they are everywhere. But you can make a difference to your own load by lowering the exposures around your home and in your food. Some people are going to be more sensitive than others to these toxins and that maybe due to DNA issues, your health status and your lifestyle.
So where to start for change?
The Conscious Spender is a great starting place. The reason I started this business was to give people the option of finding these products easily. And knowing that all these low tox products are also made here in Australia, by Australian owned companies.
You can reduce exposures by using low tox products around the home and in your personal care. You can consider your food and whether you can include any organics. This does make a difference and you will find the Organics or Not Post here.
So get started and lower your toxic load today.
