What is hiding in your Sunscreen?

What is hiding in your Sunscreen?

We live in a sunny place and we know we should SLIP SLOP SLAP to protect our skins against harmful UV rays. Right?

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable especially around kids. But does it make sense to slather your skin in a toxic chemical that may stop the UV rays but then causes many other issues? And you have to remember your skin is porous and it will soak this stuff up.

Commercial sunscreens can contain a slather of different toxins and some of these can cause endocrine disruption (hormones), allergic reactions and they can be irritants to the lungs.

Here in Australia our sunscreen is governed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. They assess the efficacy of the product to ensure that it does what it says and has a SPF protective factor in it. So you can be reassured to know your Australian sunscreen SPF factor has been tested. This will ensure you are not going to burn within the allotted timeframe.

But they are not assessing the ingredients or the chemical load of any of these sunscreens. Take a well known sunscreen that has a fruity name! It contains 4 rather toxic ingredients and it comes up on top for the list of worst sunscreens according ewg guide

So why are we still using these products? Probably because we have been mind washed into believing that sunscreen is our saviour. It can be but we really need to consider which one we choose to put onto our skins.

Not only do we need to consider our own safety but we also have to consider the environment that you are using them in. Hawaii has banned the use of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals that have been documented to be harmful to coral reef ecosystems, so if they are bad for the coral ecosystems what are they doing to our bodies ecosystem?

Some of the ingredients you need to watch out for are:

  • Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), octyl-dimethyl-PABA and octinoxate are used as a UV stabilizers and can cause hormone disruption and allergies. These guys can also penetrate the skin and increase oxidative stress levels.
  • 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) is a hormone disruptor
  • 3-Benzylidene camphor is a hormone disruptor
  •  Octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC), there is some strong evidence around this ingredient that shows is disrupts your sex hormones, and therefore is a hormonal disruptor. It is a common ingredient in commercial sunscreens.
  • Padimate O (2-ethylhexyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate), when exposed to sunlight may cause DNA disruption and allergic reactions.

So as you can see there are some rather awful ingredients to watch out for. When it says hormone disruptor this can be a whole lot of different ones. Hormone disruptors can change, mimic or block your natural hormones and this can lead to many different conditions including fertility, development (especially in kids), thyroid, sex hormones and more.

We are passionate about this subject and all of the sunscreens we sell have been checked for safety.
