Electromagnetic Fields or EMFs are something we are exposed to everyday. These are generated by electricity, power lines, power distribution networks, internet, mobile phones, household appliances and computers.

Although all this wonderful technology has bought us a great deal of convenience, they also have their drawbacks.

Research is telling us that exposure to these EMFs can cause issues with our heath. Exposure has been proven to disrupt:

  • Brain Activity
  • Hormone Activity
  • Enzyme Function
  • Nervous System Function
  • DNA synthesis
  • Cognition and learning
  • Liver health
  • Eye Health

These disruptions can also increase our risk of conditions such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, can interrupt our ability to learn and disrupt sleep.

In sleep, EMFs have been shown to supress the production of melatonin, the hormone needed for good sleep. EMFs can increase the production of oxidative damage and inflammation which are involved in numerous conditions, but most certainly affect your neurotransmitter production and hence your mood.

So, what can you do other than empty your house of all electronics which is impossible!

  • You can make sure your sleep area is free of electronics. If you need the phone for an alarm move it away from the side of the bed. And put it on airplane mode.
  • Leave TVs in the lounge room so that the bedroom is peaceful and quiet. Especially important for kids.
  • Ensure your diet is full of antioxidant foods.
  • Reduce your screen time to a maximum of 2 hours per day.
  • Do not carry your phone around in your pocket or on your body.
  • Use headphones on your wireless devices.
  • Power down at night-time.
  • Get rid of the microwave and use the stove for heating food.

I know when I first thought about EMFs, I thought it was not overly important, I mean surely, they wouldn’t sell something that is bad for our health would they!!!

But when you add EMFs to the other levels of toxic exposure you can start to see why our detoxification pathways are under a great deal of stress. Like my suggestions for toxins, it is all about reducing your toxic burden, improving your antioxidant status to help you neutralise these free radicals and eliminate them from the body.

I am no angel at this either, I still carry my phone around and am on devices all day. I almost never remember to power down at night time, but mainly because the switches are hard to reach. But I do not have a bedroom full of electronics, I rarely use a microwave, in fact mine is in the laundry because I don't use it. I am lucky enough to have this store so my house is toxic free when it comes to products. And I am a Naturopath and know how to take care of my antioxidant pathways. 

So it is about reduction and doing what you can with the knowledge you have.
